PAT Testing (portable appliance testing) can be an important area when it comes to health and safety in the workplace. PAT Testing consists of a series of tests designed to make sure portable appliances are fit for purpose and can be used safely. The Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989 states that all appliances must be maintained so they are safe to use. This means that business owners are responsible for making sure that appliances are safe to use. They are liable should problems arise from the use of appliances that are faulty.
Below are some areas of employment where PAT Testing can be useful (or are required), both for the safety of the employees and customers.
IT Companies
This is one of the most obvious areas where PAT testing can help to keep employees safe. Unsurprisingly IT companies usually have many computers and it is important all of these are maintained. Although it is rare that a PC or laptop causes any major harm, the more you have the more the risks increases.
Hospitals
Hospitals contain much electronic equipment. From heart monitors to drip’s and computers in the reception area, appliances can be found all over the place for a variety of reasons. Electrical appliances can help save lives but everything possible must be done to make sure they are kept safe so they can serve their purpose without problems.
Restaurants & Cafe’s
Ovens, microwaves and many other appliances are used in restaurant and cafe kitchens. Kitchens are often extremely busy but it is always important that safety comes first. Because everyone is in a rush and because there is water potentially involved the likelihood of appliances going wrong is relatively high. It is therefore important that every possible precaution is taken.
Manufacturing Industries
More and more computers and other electronic equipment are being used in factories. Therefore electronic safety is more of an issue than ever. It is important that things are always working from businesses point of view as they often play such a pivotal role in production. But it is also important from employee perspective to make sure they are always operating in a safe way. Accidents can easily happen in many manufacturing industries so it is important all is done to avoid them where possible. Of course not all machinery in factories are portable appliances, but many industries will use them.
Retail Outlets
Most retailers will use computers in their offices. These aren’t the only things that should be PAT tested though. If tills on the shop floor develop faults that are not spotted then the safety of both the staff and employees can be at risk. Most shops now use portable, hand-held computers to record the levels of stock they have. They are used both in the stockroom and on the shop floor, again meaning customers as well as employees can be at risk should faults arise.
Cleaning
Much cleaning equipment consists of portable appliances, with vacuum cleaners being the best example. PAT testing can be even more necessary with industrial cleaning equipment as faults are more common. Safety is paramount for cleaners, but also for any other employees or customers who are around when premises are being cleaned.

Why you need a solicitor for a divorce
Some would question whether a solicitor is necessary when going through a divorce. It is not a legal requirement but it is advisable. How important using a solicitor is will depend partly on the nature of the divorce proceedings. For example, it is more important in a contested divorce than an uncontested one.
One reason why you might deem it necessary to hire a divorce solicitor is that you ex-spouse might have done. This may give them an advantage over you. Ideally couples separate amicably, and some do, however many are unable to. A divorce is often fraught with high strung emotions and it is not always easy for the two sides to put aside their differences. Therefore you don’t want you ex-spouse to have an advantage. Many divorces end up going to court, and if you find yourself in this situation then a solicitor is definitely advisable.
When going thorough divorce proceedings much depends on the personal situations of the former couple. If they owned a home together then this complicates things. It will have to be decided who should get the home and whether or not this person should compensate the other party. It may be deemed the home should be sold, and if so it will need to be established how the profits from the sale are distributed; should it be split down the middle or should one party be given more than the other. If one half of the former couple worked and other did not then the one who did may have to pay a significant amount of their income to their ex-spouse, or pay them a one-off payment. How finances should be split in general must also be established, as must anything else owned between the two. A solicitor can help to get the best possible outcome in all areas.
If there are children involved things can be much more complex. This can be the major concern. Having a good solicitor can therefore become even more important. The most complex, and heartbreaking, situation is if the former couple are fighting over custody of their children. Sometimes children will live with their divorced parents half of the time each, but in most cases one or the other will be given primary custody. When this is the case it will need to be established how often the other parents will see the children, and a legal agreement will need to be established. It is likely that parties would like to see their children as much as possible and a solicitor can put across the best case possible. Child support can be another issue; with the parent not living with the children full-time possible required to pay maintenance to help the other parent bring them up.
How facts are put across can be very important. You want to be understood as you intent. Solicitors know how to help you with this and can advise you on how to express yourself. The way things are phrased can make a big difference. Saying the wrong things can mean the other side and the judge misinterprets you. In some ways like this, a solicitor is also an advisor. The opposing solicitor might try to put pressure on you to answer a question in a way you don’t intend and incriminate you. If this is the case your solicitor will protect you and object to this.
Possibly the main reason why you should use a solicitor is that they have the knowledge that you don’t. They know your rights in certain situations and can make sure you get what you deserve after the divorce. They know the law and how to use it to protect and help their clients. It is important to use a family law solicitor as they know this particular field and have the specific experience necessary to help. There is no point using a criminal solicitor or banking lawyer for a divorce.

Custody of Children after a Divorce
Over the course of history women have been given custody of children after a divorce more often than men. This used to be seen almost as an automatic right. This has changed slightly in recent times though, with Fathers given significantly more rights when it comes to looking after children post-divorce. This applies to both custody and visitation rights if their ex-wife has been given custody. A Father’s role in the development of children is taken much more seriously than in previous times. Family Law states that Fathers have equal rights to Mothers and each decision should be made on its specific merits.
Statistics show that women get custody more than men though. What is the reason for this? It could be that there is still some bias towards women by judges, who assume that Mothers make better parents. On the other hand it could just be that Mothers tend to more often be in the position where the children living with them would be more appropriate.
After a divorce there are many factors that are taken into consideration when deciding which parent should get custody of the children. Each parent’s employment status can be a very important factor. If one parent works full-time and the other doesn’t work at all, it may be deemed best that the children live with the parent who does not work. This is because (s)he has more time to be able to devote towards the children. This may be one reason why women gain custody more often than men; it is more common for women to be stay-at-home parents than men, although this is not as common as it once was. A decision is most likely to be based on this reason if the situation was the same when the couple were married, and this parent has spent more time with their children as a consequence. The decision can in some cases be made the other way round, with the parent who does work being deemed to be in a more financially stable situation. This is not always the case because this parent will usually be required to make maintenance payments to help the other parent bring up their children.
The situation each parent finds themselves in and the stability of this situation is also important. This can depends on employment as well as other factors, such as lifestyle. If one parent has medical or psychological problems, then they may not be deemed the best parent to bring up the children. If one parent has re-married it could work either way. It may be seen as a negative to have someone else playing a part in their upbringing so soon after their parents have separated, but it could also be decided that this is a better family environment to bring children up in. A criticism of the system is that too much of the decision comes down to the opinions of a particular judge, and no matter how much Family Law stipulates what should happen, everyone has certain biases.

Who can benefit from Colocation?
Colocation is a type of dedicated web hosting. Dedicated Hosting means a website is hosted on its own server, and not shared with any other sites. With colocation clients have their own dedicated server which they control, but hire rackspace at a data centre. They use the data centre’s infrastructure and pay a free for it.
Here we take a look at who can benefit from using Colocation hosting.
WEBSITES THAT HAVE A LOT OF TRAFFIC
Share hosting is not sufficient for sites that have a high amount of traffic. It is therefore necessary for these sites to be hosted on a dedicated server. This is simply because if a website is sharing everything, including bandwidth, with other sites there is unlikely to be sufficient bandwidth available to host a site that receives an extreme amount of traffic.
THOSE WITHOUT THE FACILITIES TO HOST THEIR OWN SERVER
Many website owners would like to have their own server but simply don’t have, and are unable to have, the necessary facilities. This could be due to infrastructure or the lack of enough physical space. Colocation for these people, is the perfect solution. They have their own server as they wish but are able to use a data centre’s facilities, so overcome the problem of not having this infrastructure themselves.
THOSE WHO WANT CONTROL BUT DON’T HAVE THE BUDET TO HOST THEIR OWN SERVER
Colocation is cheaper than some other forms of dedicated hosting as the clients are performing the hosting and maintenance tasks themselves. Hosting your own server is an expensive business though. There needs to be investment in the facilities for them only to be used by themselves. If the server is hosted at a data centre, then many of the facilities can be shared with their other clients and this reduces the costs.
ANYONE WHO NEEDS THEIR HOSTING TO CONSTANTLY RUN SMOOTHLY
A dedicated server is a lot less likely to encounter problems than a shared server, as websites are not affected by other sites. So if a website owner can simply not afford to have problems then colocation is one of the options available to them.
BUSINESSES THAT ARE EXPECTED TO GROW
It is not advisable just to think about the present; you also need to think about the future. If a small business, or start-up business, is expecting to grow in the future it is best to take this into consideration when choosing their hosting. Hosting requirements may be minimal to begin with – the website might be small with little traffic – but if there is a dramatic rise in the business’s success then they could encounter problems if they have only chosen basic hosting. With Colocation clients sometimes only have to pay for the bandwidth, electricity, and other factor, they are using. With other types of dedicated hosting they need to choose a particular package and therefore if they are using less than predicted they will still be paying for it. The advantage of colocation for growing businesses is that they will only have to pay a small amount when they are using a limited amount of these variables, but can then use more if they unexpectedly need to.

History of VoIP
VoIP has been around for about fifteen years, but most of its rise in popularity has come in the past five years. The first company to provide a product using VoIP technology is thought to be the Israeli company, Vocaltec, when they first bought out their service in 1995. It ran on a PC and was used by listening through the PC’s speakers and taking through a microphone. All early VoIP worked this way, and some still does. The Vocaltec service was referred to as an ‘internet phone’. The quality was poor by telephone standards. It was mostly used for personal use and not really suitable for business.
VoIP technology grew over the next two or three years. People began to see the potential for this cheap alternative and experimented with different ways of using, and improving, this technology. Larger telecommunications companies started to think about developing VoIP services, and how it could also be used for business rather than just a cheap, poor quality service.
With early VoIP it was only possible to make calls from PC to PC. As the technology improved it became possible to make calls from a PC to telephones. This allowed users to call anyone, but they would have to use their PC to make these calls. It is now possible to use an internet connection but talk through a telephone or telephone like device, using VoIP adapters and VoIP phones. VoIP adapters allow users to use their existing telephone to talk over IP, and VoIP phones are devices that use the internet connection but look and feel just like a telephone. These have developed as providers have looked to improve not just VoIP’s quality but also the user experience, meaning it is more likely to be taken up by a mass market.
VoIP’s quality is something that has improved significantly. The growing popularity of broadband has been crucial to this. A high percentage of internet users now use broadband, which is important as the internet connection is the most important factor in the quality of VoIP. This has meant that more people have access to quality VoIP. The growing competition within the VoIP industry has meant they are all trying to improve quicker than their competitors. This has lead to a better all round service for customers. There are now many Business VoIP providers who provide a quality service, while still cheaper than the equivalent telephone providers.
Skype is probably the best known cheap VoIP provider. Calls with Skype are free PC to PC, and calls from a PC to a telephone are very cheap. It is mostly useful for personal use calling friends and family, but not suitable for business. There are sign though, that they are looking to move into this area.

An overview of the Cheltenham Festival
The Cheltenham Festival is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the UK horse racing calendar. It is the climax of the National Hunt season and takes place at Prestbury Park in the middle of every March.
These days the Cheltenham Festival compromised of 26 races over a four day period, running between Tuesday and Friday. Each day consists of either six or seven races, and one championship race. The first race of every day begins around 1.30 and culminates with the final race between 4.30 and 5.30 depending on the schedule and the number of races. Across the four days over 200,000 spectators visit the venue. It is mostly British and Irish Jockeys who take part but the number from elsewhere have increased in recent years. As with any horse racing event gambling plays a huge part, with around £600 million put on races in 2009.
One of the things the Festival is famous for is its strong Irish feel, both on the race course and in the stands. Many of the trainers, horses and jockeys over the years have been Irish, and thousands come across from Ireland to watch every year. Part of the festivities as far as the Irish contingent is concerned is that is coincides with their national day, St. Patrick’s Day.
The history of the Cheltenham Festival now dates back 108 years, with the first festival having taken place in 1902. Until 2005 it had been a three day event. Racing at Prestbury Park dates back even further though – all the way back to 1815. The most successful jockey in the festivals history is Pat Taafe who totalled 25 wins throughout his career. He is in danger of being caught though, with current rider Ruby Walsh only one behind Taafe’s record.
The highlight of the week is the Gold Cup. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is up there with the Grand National and the Melbourne Cup as being synonymous with horse racing. It is contested over three miles and two and a half furlongs and there are twenty two fences to be negotiated. Prize money for this race alone is almost half a million pounds – the first Gold Cup in 1924 had a prize pot of just £624, although this would have been a lot of money at the time. Four horses have won three or more Gold Cup’s; Golden Miller, who won five consecutive, Cottage Rake, Arkle, and Best Mate, who achieved a hat-trick between 2002 and 2004.
The Gold Cup takes place on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival and is one of the four Championship races. The others are the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the World Hurdle, and take place on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

What are Investment Trusts?
Investment Trusts are a type of investment scheme, which are managed by an investment company. It allows investment to invest in shares within companies chosen by the trust board and fund managers. Investors purchase shares within the investment trust, which are in turn invested on their behalf.
An investment trust is set up with a fixed amount that makes up the trust total. This is the total amount that will be invested between all those wishing to take part. This full amount is then split into shares, which investors can then purchase. Once all these shares have been sold the total fund amount is invested in other companies’. Investors can by any number of shares they like, from one to several.
A board with a fund manager run the scheme on behalf of the investors. They will decide which stocks and shares the fund is invested in. This is out of the hands of the investors themselves; they are affectively intrusting the board and fund manager to choose the best investment products possible. These will usually be spread over a number of products, so everything is not put towards one thing. This reduces the risk as not everything will be lost due to one poor decision or one unexpected fall in shares.
There are a number of advantages to investment trusts compared to people investing alone. It is a collective investment between many people, meaning more can be invested in total. The increased total amount reduces the risk as opposed to one individual investing the same amount all by themselves. And the more that is invested, the more the potential returns are. In comparison with other investment opportunities it is a relatively cheap way for people to invest in the stock market. It is managed by experts, who are experienced at what they do and know how different markets work. Of course nothing is full proof but this is one of the reasons many people, especially those without the same level of expertise, choose to invest in this way. It is advantageous for those who lack the confidence to make investment decisions themselves.
Investment trusts may not be ideal for those who like to make their own investment decisions. As it is managed by the board and fund managers, the investments chosen are out of the hands of those who are actually investing the money. As mentioned above, there can be benefits to this, but others prefer to have more of a say.

Advantages and Disadvantages of being a Freelance Web Designer
There are advantages and disadvantages of being a freelance web designer, as opposed to working for an agency. Here we take a look at some of the benefits and negatives of working freelance.
TIME OFF
Freelancers can have time off whenever they please. They can take work and turn down work when they like, meaning they can fit in extra time off should they choose to do so. They get paid for the work they do and don’t get paid when they aren’t working. This is an advantage if they would like more time off than the average agency employee, but it does mean that they won’t be getting paid for any time off. Employees are legally entitled to at least four weeks paid holiday per year, but a freelancer will not be receiving any income while not working. This also means they receive no sick pay, unless they are signed off and are able to claim benefits.
STRESS
Depending on how you look at it and the particular situation someone finds themselves in, working as a freelancer can either be more or less stressful than working for an agency. You may not have targets set by someone else so if something takes a little longer than expected it may not matter as much. In some ways you can work to your own time scales, although this is dependent on the clients’ expectations. The problem is that you are reliant on only yourself. There is no back up if there are issues to resolve, so difficulties in the job can be more stressful.
FINDING WORK
The work you take on is completely up to you if you work freelance. If you don’t like the sound of a project, or don’t have the skills necessary to undertake it, you can simply turn it down. You wouldn’t have this choice if working for a web design agency. Finding work can also be one of the main negatives of a freelancer though. There is no guarantee of the work flooding in, and any time when there is no work will mean no income. Many freelancers, especially those just beginning their career, will not have the same contacts as an experienced agency with a good reputation. Of course, this may change as your reputation grows.
STARTING OUT
Your start up costs will not be too significant. If you are working alone there will be no salaries to pay (although you will want to be earning yourself), and you can work from home, thus making the requirement for an office redundant. The disadvantage will be the lack of experience, making it difficult to find clients who trust you. Without any evidence of the work you can provide you may have to work for little, or even nothing, early on.
OTHER SERVICES
A web design agency may offer more than just web design. They may cross over to other services such as web hosting, graphic design and SEO (search engine optimisation). This can help get the agency work if clients need one of these other services as well as web design, as many clients prefer to keep all these services within one company. Freelancers lack this backup. It is possible that you could manage these services though, and outsource them.
WORKING ALONE VS. WORKING WITH OTHERS
If you are not good at working with other people then freelancing could be very beneficial. Although you have to work with clients, for the main part you be left alone to get on with the job. Some prefer to have others as backup though and find it difficult to stay motivated when working alone. For these people working for an agency is likely to be preferable to working as a freelance web designer.
Agencies often have their specific ways of doing things. To some, not having to work within their rules and not having to follow their processes will be a plus point; you can get on with the job as you see fit. On the other hand, companies’ structures can be a good framework to work within, meaning everyone works to their full productivity.
MONEY
If you are a freelancer you will keep one hundred per cent of the income. If you are successful there will be no limit to how much you can earn. You may want to grow into a larger business if you become successful, but you will be able to choose your own salary, as long as it is affordable. The disadvantage on the money front is that you won’t earn anything until you have completed some chargeable work. If you are struggling to find work you won’t be earning an income. However, if you are working for an agency they have to pay you.

TIME OFF
Freelancers can have time off whenever they please.
Shutters in different Weather Conditions
Window Shutters can be used in different ways depending on the weather conditions. They can be used either to make the most of the weather or make a building more comfortable in the conditions. The ways in which they can be opened and closed make them more adjustable than curtains and allow this control. This is especially the case with louvered shutters. In fact, this is their very purpose.
IN THE SUMMER
In the summertime homes can get uncomfortably hot. This is the very reason why window shutters were first inventing in the Mediterranean. In extremely hot weather shutters can be completely closed, shutting out the blistering sun. This will protect the home from the heat as the sun cannot shine through shutters as they can with curtains. But there are many other options on top of completely open or completely shut. Having either the shutter, or the shutter louvers partly open can mean air is emitted without letting in all the heat. This can be used to cool down a room. With most fittings a shutter is fixed on either side of the window so they meet in the middle, allowing them to be opened and closed separately. They can be opened however the user sees fit, and open at angles meaning the sun can be blocked out while allowing plenty of air and light to enter a room.
IN THE WINTER
In the winter shutters can be used for the opposite affect: to insulate against the cold. The thick wood typically used for window shutters means they are much better at insulating a home than curtains or blinds. This can mean significant protection against the cold.
On a sunny winters day shutters can be used to keep a room warm while still having the advantage of the sun. Of course, like curtains, they can be completely open, but there are other options that still allow for some insulation without blocking out the daylight. The louvers can be opened, or the shutters can be open on one side and closed on the other or anywhere in-between the two.
AS IT GETS WARMER
As winter turns into summer windows can be opened to keep a room cool, while the shutters can be closed to keep it warmer than if everything is kept completely open. They can be adjusted perfectly to the exact conditions. For example, the shutter slats can be open with the actually shutters closed. As it gets warmer more air can be let in.
NATURAL DISASTERS
Another advantage of shutters is that they can be used to protect against extreme weather such as hurricanes or tornadoes. Exterior shutters can be used to protect windows as they are very durable. After a natural disaster windows can make a home extremely cold or unsafe, but shutters can potentially protect against this. Interior shutters will not protect the windows but could still protect the interior of the home and the people inside. All this depends on the strength of both the weather and the materials used to manufacture the shutters.

How Parenting has been affected by the Recession
The current recession is having its effect on many people. This can be even more of a problem for parents. It is expensive bringing up children so when parents suffer financial problems it can become even more of a problem than for others. If you have a family to support you have many more things to worry about than when supporting just yourself. And nobody wants to feel they are letting their family down.
Children are constantly growing, so need new clothes regularly; much more often than adult. They also need feeding, and all parents like to spoil their children once in a while. This all adds up, and during time of financial trouble this can be a real burden.
The recession has caused many problems making it more difficult for parents. Unemployment has risen significantly, and currently stand at a little under two and a half million in the UK. Many others have been forced to reduce their hours though, while pay rises have become less common, meaning the cost of living in real terms has gone up for a lot of people. When parents are suddenly faced with receiving no income, or a lower income than before, it can make supporting their children very difficult. With fewer jobs available, it means many who have lost their jobs have found it difficult to find work again. Manufacturing has taken a particular hit, and many in these jobs have never worked in any other industry, meaning they lack the skills to find work elsewhere.
Being unemployed has many knock on effects. Many (both due to unemployment and other reasons) have come into money problems. The number of people struggling to pay their mortgage has risen sharply causing some to lose their home, something that is unsettling for children. Unmanageable debt has also been an issue, all adding to families’ woes and making parenting even more difficult.
Single parents can especially suffer financially. To support their children they may have to work full-time, meaning the added expense of child care. Many believe this is not ideal and that it is better for at least one parent to be at home looking after the children but this is not feasible for all, especially single parents. Single parents who do stay at home, or work part-time, are obviously more likely to find times tough financially.
In the UK, as well as much of the world, family law dictates that divorced parent usually have to pay maintenance on behalf of their children. This money assists the other parent in bringing up the children. Some divorced parents have found it tough paying the normal maintenance, causing more problems for the parent living with their children. This may only be temporary due to the current climate but many need this money now. Most divorced parents want to pay for their children but it is not always that simple. Some are currently faced with a situation where it is just not possible. This can all lead to further debt for both parents living with, and without, their children.
All sorts of people are suffering due to the recession. This can be particularly hard if you have children to look after. Having children is expensive, so money troubles are going to have even more of an impact.

Legal Criteria for Charities
It is important that there are a set of guidelines to say who can claim to be a charity and who cannot. The reason for this is that people need to be sure that organisations they are donating to are genuine charities. There are a set of criteria that an organisation must fall under to be considered a charity by UK law. A Charity must be working to fulfil one of the following goals.
Relief of Poverty
This includes organisation who work to prevent poverty, as well as those who help people suffering due to living in poverty. There are certain criteria that dictate what counts as poverty. This umbrella includes those working to prevent and relieve poverty both in the UK and internationally.
Human Rights
Those who act for positive human rights or promote human right can apply for charity status under this criteria. This includes treatment by governments, and anything connected to war, or the resolution of conflicts. A vast array of areas are included, from domestic abuse to major conflicts around the world.
Advancement of Education
Those who provide education fall under this category. Many areas are considered as education, not just education in institutions such as schools, colleges and universities. Adult education, as well as specialist education for those with learning difficulties and other disadvantages are included. Organisations who assist with person development can also apply for charity status under this heading. It doesn’t just cover those who provide education, but those who promote education as well.
Advancement of Health
This mainly consists of those providing medical help; whether it is actually treating those with medical issues or the distribution of medicines to those in need. Medical research, as well as education around health are covered, as are anyone who promote methods to prevent health problems.
Advancement of Religion
This is a controversial area as some don’t believe that religious groups should be able to apply for charity status. Groups who promote and educate within all religions can be included in this area. It isn’t just pro-religion groups though, atheist groups are also covered here.
Art, Heritage and Science
Like religion, not everyone agrees this is an area of charity, as it isn’t having the obvious effect of health and poverty on people’s lives. Those involved in these areas can be considered charities as they can be in the greater public interest, and it is considered important that art and heritage interests are maintained. Historic sites come under this section of charity law.
Animal Welfare
This includes those acting against the cruelty of animals, as well as those who promote animal welfare. Charities working on behalf of all animals come under this umbrella.
Advancement of amateur Sport
Coming under this area are organisations who work to improve amateur sport, and give opportunities to people to take part in sport. A large number of organisations within this area are those who work within disabled sport.
The Armed Forces
This is those who promote or assist in improving the efficiency of the armed forces. This includes those working on improving safety for service men and women, and those who help injured veterans and the families of those affected by the loss of those within the armed forces.
Relief of those in need, by reasons of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial disadvantage or other disadvantage
These are organisations who help people disadvantaged due to the above issues. A large part of this are organisations assisting those with disabilities. The poor and those with mental health issues are amongst the many areas included.

Parents not taking advantage of the Child Trust Fund
According to research carried out by Unbiased.co.uk parents are wasting £63 million in child trust fund tax breaks. The research shows that only 24% of parents are adding to the fund themselves, with a miniscule 1% adding the maximum allowed amount of £1,200 a year.
The Child Trust Fund scheme sees parents of new born children receive a £250 CTF voucher from the government to invest on behalf of their children, and then receive another £250 voucher when their child turns seven. This can be added to by family and friends up to the amount of £1,200 a year, and the child receives the accumulated amount plus interest when (s)he turns 18. If fully taken advantage of the accumulated amount is over £22,000 before interest, a big helping hand to an 18 year old.
Was it ever realistic though that many parents would be in the position to add £1,200 every year? To a lot of parents this is a large amount of money; the equivalent of £100 a month. This is simply not affordable to many and the reason why the percentage adding the full amount is so low.
Supporters of the child trust fund will be disappointed that only a quarter have been adding anything at all. When the scheme was introduced it was expected that more would contribute something. Some may have taken the attitude that if they can only afford a small amount then it would not be worthwhile spending money on it, and better to support their children financially in other ways. Those with more than one child, or those who plan to have more children in future, may be thinking they will not be able to do the same for all their children, so don’t add to the child trust fund of any.
It has been suggested that many are unaware of exactly how the scheme works. According to Unbiased.co.uk 1.2 million parents haven’t invested the original child trust fund voucher. It is thought that many of those who have still don’t understand the specifics of how the scheme work and how it can benefit their children.
The Conservative Party have vowed to limit the scheme to the less well off families as part of their cost cutting plans should they win the 2010 general election. This will decrease the percentage of parents investing in the scheme even further. It is thought that parents earning over £16,000 won’t be entitled to the child trust fund the Tories come into power. The problem here would be the demographic who typically take advantage of the scheme will no longer be entitled to it. The only ones who will still be part of the initive are those families who cannot afford to take advantages. It could be argued therefore, that there are two decisions that can be made; either to keep it open for all (the Labour policy) or scrap it all together (the Liberal Democrats).

Using your hosting facilities to offer services to others
Businesses who run their own web hosting should consider using their hosting facilities to host the website of others. They can do this either by becoming a full blown host, with their own hosting staff and department, or simply offering colocation services. If you have a facility already being used for your own hosting, then why not share it? It is already there so you can make a profit out of it.
If you have advanced knowledge of hosting and are wiling to invest, you can become the hosting provider for other websites. You can add hosting to your existing business meaning the potential for bigger profits. You could employ specialist staff to run your hosting department, and these employees could then run the hosting of your own website as well as the sites of your hosting clients. If handled in the right way having your own hosting facility could turn into a major business opportunity.
Those without the relevant knowledge or ambition to offer advanced hosting solutions could still co-locate the servers of other websites. Colocation normally consists of clients hosting their servers at a data centre. Why don’t you become this data centre? Clients will lease rack space from you but be in charge of the actual hosting themselves. You will be using the facilities you already have in place for the hosting of your own websites. With this colocation option, you provide the environment, but your clients take care of the rest. This may not be as profitable but could pay for the facility, meaning the hosting of your website will effectively be paying for itself.
The good thing about this is that you are only using the facilities that you already have. Although some investment will be necessary, if you only have a few fairly small clients it shouldn’t be too significant. You have everything you need for your own purposes so you are just making this into another profitable part of your business. Most websites only use a small amount of the bandwidth available to them, and this will make use of that extra bandwidth. What’s more – you will be making money out of it. Bandwidth is just one example of the areas where you will be using what you already have for this extra benefit.
Even if you are only offering Colocation facilities to clients you will still have other things to consider. Security will have to be high as you are hosting other people’s websites; people who are paying you to make sure everything is secure. If there are security problems, technical faults, power failures, or other issues you are responsible for them and you will need to make sure they are solved. At the end of the day, if you are offering a service, you are responsible for making sure the services is a good one for your clients. You need to make sure you know what you are doing (or employ people who do), and you have to take your hosting venture seriously.
